Monty Williams is an American basketball coach and retired NBA player. He was born Tavares Montgomery Williams, Jr. on October 8, 1971, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He attended Potomac High School in Maryland, followed by the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. He played as a small forward for Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball team. He averaged 22.4 points and 8.4 rebounds during his senior year.
CAREER
The New York Knicks selected Williams with the 24th overall pick in the 1994 NBA draft. He played nine seasons in the NBA for five different teams. He was forced to retire after 2002-2003 with the Philadelphia 76ers due to chronic knee problems. Williams made his assistant coaching debut with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2005. He served as head coach of the New Orleans Hornets / Pelicans from 2010-to 2015. He became associate head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder in June 2015.
